Grand Teton National Park
Just For Kids
Become a Junior Ranger
Pick up an activity newspaper at any park visitor center and start earning your official NPS Junior Ranger badge. Learn about American Indian tribes, early settlers, animal habits, glaciers and other fascinating topics. When you answer all the questions in the newspaper, turn it in at a visitor center to receive your badge. A $1 donation to the park is requested. Or join a ranger-led program for a fun and educational two hour program just for kids between the ages of eight and 12.
Listen to Campfire Stories
Rangers visit park campgrounds to share informative stories during evening programs. You'll hear about wildlife, geology, early explorers, American Indians and other favorite Grand Teton tales. Most campgrounds have nightly talks or slide-show presentations. Check the Teewinot newspaper for what's happening at a campground near you.
Explore Elk Island
Tour boats from Colter Bay Village Marina visit this big island in the middle of Jackson Lake (cruise includes breakfast or dinner). You can also rent a boat on your own and bring a picnic to the island. To book a boat tour, please call the Grand Teton Lodge Company at (307) 543-3100.
Land the Big One!
Kids under 14 years old fish for free in park waters as long as someone older, with a valid Wyoming fishing license, tags along. Guided lake and river fishing trips and lake boat rentals are available (see the park newspaper or ask at a visitor center). Kids 14 to 18 years old pay reduced rates for their fishing licenses.

The Nisqually Road in Mount Rainier National Park will reopen today, a day earlier than expected. The road, and the park, have been closed since Nov. 12 when Kautz Creek jumped its banks and flooded the main road into the park.

Reporting from Glacier National Park -- No one knew what to expect on the trail to Grinnell Glacier one late summer morning, but a second bull moose less than an hour out was hardly a good sign. During September and October -- mating season -- it's always best to give the spindly-legged animals plenty of room.

An upcoming National Park Service (NPS) rule change could greatly benefit mountain bicycling by improving the administrative process for opening trails to bicycles. IMBA has been asking the agency to revise its policies since 1992, because the current "special regulations" process is needlessly cumbersome and treats bicycles like motorized vehicles.

On our recent trip to Hawaii we had a feeling that things were less busy than usual. Now there are some numbers to back up our hunch: The national parks in the state saw a drop in attendance of more than 50,000 visitors during the month of October.
