Charges to Be Filed for Glacier Park Elk Shooting
November 25, 2008, 10:53 amA bull elk is dead and a young Flathead Valley man is awaiting charges in what appears to have been a poaching case in Glacier National Park.
“We’re not wanting to make an example of a juvenile,” said Glacier Park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt, “but at the same time, hunting is illegal in the park.”

Glacier Park Seeks Wilderness Designation
November 25, 2008, 10:50 amWhen Glacier National Park celebrates its big birthday in 2010, not a few folk are hoping the 100 candles on the centennial cake will be arranged in the shape of a giant “W.”
That's capital “W,” as in formal wilderness status, a designation that has eluded these 1 million acres since the early 1970s.

Effort Launched to Develop Countywide Trails Plan

Glacier National Park Gets Assistance
November 10, 2008, 10:04 amA group that raises private dollars for Glacier National Park will donate more than $200,000 to the park in 2009.
The Glacier National Park Fund usually limits its giving to programs or projects considered above and beyond core park services. But in the coming year, private donors will help pay for such things as bear-resistant storage lockers, wildlife management, endangered species protection and equipment upgrades for wildlife rangers.

Glacier National Park Sees Fewer Visitors
October 29, 2008, 10:45 amGlacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park both experienced a slump in visitor numbers this past season.
Glacier National Park officials said they think the 2.6% decline is primarily related to the late opening of the Going to the Sun Road and the early partial closing for construction.

Glacier National Park Reopens Road
September 25, 2008, 10:13 amThe Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park reopened Wednesday after closing for snowy conditions.
Construction crews at Logan Pass said several inches of snow had fallen and it was thick enough they didn't want visitors to have difficulties, so they closed the road between Big Bend and Logan Pass.

Glacier Reports Shuttle Ridership Down This Summer
September 11, 2008, 1:01 pmShuttle ridership at Glacier National Park was down about 20 percent this year because of a later start, shorter hours and mechanical difficulties, officials said Wednesday.
"We haven't decided what changes to make next season," said park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt. "We'll hold some planning sessions to analyze the data later this fall."

Regular Searches to Halt for Missing Hiker
September 3, 2008, 2:20 pmGlacier National Park officials decided Tuesday to discontinue regular searches for a hiker reported missing last month.
No new clues on 27-year-old Yi-Jien Hwa's whereabouts were found last weekend after search teams scoured locations adjacent on his planned 100-mile hike through a remote area of the park.

As the Great Smoky Mountains National Park prepares to celebrate its 75th year, students of history and geology are pondering questions that go back much farther than the park's creation in the 1930s. The most fascinating queries to them concern the actual formation of the mountains, their age and topography.
