The News from Glacier

Grounded in God, Green and Glaciers

Remember when Arizona Sen. John McCain criticized spending millions of taxpayer dollars to fund the DNA of grizzly bears in Montana during one of the presidential debates?

“That’s us,” said David Restivo, a Roberts Wesleyan College alumnus and visual information specialist at Glacier National Park in Montana.

Charges to Be Filed for Glacier Park Elk Shooting

A bull elk is dead and a young Flathead Valley man is awaiting charges in what appears to have been a poaching case in Glacier National Park.

“We’re not wanting to make an example of a juvenile,” said Glacier Park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt, “but at the same time, hunting is illegal in the park.”

Glacier Park Seeks Wilderness Designation

When Glacier National Park celebrates its big birthday in 2010, not a few folk are hoping the 100 candles on the centennial cake will be arranged in the shape of a giant “W.”

That's capital “W,” as in formal wilderness status, a designation that has eluded these 1 million acres since the early 1970s.

Jenna Otter Returns to Scene of Grizzly Bear Attack

Reporting from Glacier National Park -- No one knew what to expect on the trail to Grinnell Glacier one late summer morning, but a second bull moose less than an hour out was hardly a good sign. During September and October -- mating season -- it's always best to give the spindly-legged animals plenty of room.

Effort Launched to Develop Countywide Trails Plan

The Flathead County Parks and Recreation Board is developing a countywide system of nonmotorized pathways to connect all the major population centers to each other, as well as Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest and state and county parks.

Glacier National Park Gets Assistance

A group that raises private dollars for Glacier National Park will donate more than $200,000 to the park in 2009.

The Glacier National Park Fund usually limits its giving to programs or projects considered above and beyond core park services. But in the coming year, private donors will help pay for such things as bear-resistant storage lockers, wildlife management, endangered species protection and equipment upgrades for wildlife rangers.

Glacier National Park Sees Fewer Visitors

Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park both experienced a slump in visitor numbers this past season.

Glacier National Park officials said they think the 2.6% decline is primarily related to the late opening of the Going to the Sun Road and the early partial closing for construction.

Glacier Park to Remain Cell Phone Dead Zone

Yellowstone National Park recently announced plans to bring cellular service to the area, but Glacier says that they have no plans to follow suit.

Glacier National Park Reopens Road

The Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park reopened Wednesday after closing for snowy conditions.

Construction crews at Logan Pass said several inches of snow had fallen and it was thick enough they didn't want visitors to have difficulties, so they closed the road between Big Bend and Logan Pass.

‘Lost, Never Found': Yi-Jien Hwa among Those Swallowed by Glacier National Park

A month and more they've waited, this mother and this wife, a world away from home in a place where time has stopped.

Theirs is a test of Biblical proportions, 40 days and 40 nights, lingering in suspended animation, their Kalispell motel room a purgatory located somewhere between hoping and believing and knowing.

“We said we'd wait 40 days,” said Kim Guat. “This is the final stretch.”

Results of MT Grizzly Bear Study Released

The grizzly bear is one of Northwest Montana's biggest natural attractions and now we know even more about it as the lead researcher has released the results of the massive five year DNA study at Glacier National Park.

Glacier Reports Shuttle Ridership Down This Summer

Shuttle ridership at Glacier National Park was down about 20 percent this year because of a later start, shorter hours and mechanical difficulties, officials said Wednesday.

"We haven't decided what changes to make next season," said park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt. "We'll hold some planning sessions to analyze the data later this fall."

Ken Burns on Vacation/Location at Glacier National Park

It's too early for civilians. As dawn's first light falls on the jagged peaks, creeps down the dwindling glaciers and glides across glass-faced Swiftcurrent Lake, most of the tourists in the Many Glacier Hotel are still snoozing.

Regular Searches to Halt for Missing Hiker

Glacier National Park officials decided Tuesday to discontinue regular searches for a hiker reported missing last month.

No new clues on 27-year-old Yi-Jien Hwa's whereabouts were found last weekend after search teams scoured locations adjacent on his planned 100-mile hike through a remote area of the park.
