Actually I bought this jacket as a replacement to another heavier two layered North Face jacket I already own. I was pretty amazed how light this jacket is and how small it packs. I tried it in Utah just a few days ago and was pretty amazed how warm it keeps me. If you go really cold you could always take the inner jacket out and put a fleece in. Great jacket for the price.
